Key Indian Environmental & ESG Regulations
An overview of major compliance frameworks impacting the Indian textile industry.

Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR)

Mandated by SEBI for the top 1000 listed companies, this framework requires detailed disclosures on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, pushing for greater transparency.

Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974

A foundational law that governs water pollution. For textile units, especially dyeing and processing, this mandates the treatment of effluents to meet standards set by the Central and State Pollution Control Boards (CPCB & SPCB).

Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981

Regulates air emissions from industrial plants. Textile mills must monitor and control emissions from boilers, generators, and other machinery to comply with national air quality standards.

Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme

A market-based mechanism under the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) that applies to energy-intensive textile units. It sets energy reduction targets and allows for the trading of energy-saving certificates.

Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016

Governs the handling and disposal of hazardous waste, including chemical sludge from dyeing and processing units, ensuring environmentally safe management.
